Call For Applicants: Shinnors Scholarship MA in Curatorial Studies

Applications are invited for the Shinnors Scholarship 2009 - MA in Curatorial Studies at Limerick City Gallery of Art, Limerick City Council and Limerick School of Art & Design, Limerick Institute of Technology.

A unique opportunity for practice based research with Limerick City Gallery of Art, a leading Irish institution with a mission to curate and celebrate artistic creativity, past, present and future.

This scholarship is a joint initiative of the Limerick School of Art and Design, LIT and the Limerick City Gallery of Art, part of Limerick City Council. The successful applicant will receive a scholarship to undertake a MA by Research (Mode A) at Limerick School of Art and Design over a two year period and be based predominantly at the Limerick City Gallery of Art. The funding for the project is provided by a scholarship donated for this purpose by the Limerick City Gallery of Art.

The is a unique learning opportunity for the successful applicant on a day-to-day basis to study and engage with all aspects of the gallery's core activities including the Exhibition Programme, the Permanent Collection, the Outreach and Education Programme. The culmination of the scholarship provides for the submission of a thesis based on the development of some aspect of the gallery's programme.


Project Title: Curatorial Museum based Research Project
Award Sought: MA
Method: By Research (Mode A)
Duration: Two year programme 35 hours per week internship
Venue: The student internship will be at the Limerick City Gallery Of Art, under the supervision and direction of the Director / Curator, and other gallery staff. Research work will be carried out in the Limerick School of Art and Design at LIT.
Funding: The student will receive a stipend of €10,000 per annum paid in monthly instalments. A budget of €1,000 per annum will be available for materials and attendance at conferences, seminars etc. The course fee will be approximately €2,257 and for non-EU applicants it will be €9,200. This will be paid in full for the student jointly by Limerick City Gallery of Art and LIT. The successful applicant will be required to pay a college registration fee of approximately €1500 per annum and a one-off administration charge to HETAC of €200. Supervision: Curator at Limerick City Gallery of Art and Supervisor/s to be appointed from Limerick School of Art and Design.
 
Proposed Programme for Student Curatorship/MA Programme

Year One

In the first year the successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn in a gallery environment, undertake reading as appropriate and as directed by supervisors, will be given the opportunity to gain competency in office skills, information management and technology in relation to the Gallery programmes and to develop necessary skills in relation to the handling of artwork, its installation, and knowledge of good practice in relation to the care and storage of an art collection. The student will also:
* participate in the general day to day administration of the Gallery;
* gain knowledge of the care, maintenance and storage of the Gallery's Permanent Collection;
* assist in the organisation and implementation of the programme of exhibitions, from planning, to transportation, to exhibition layout and to the installation of exhibitions;
* have the opportunity to meet and engage with artists, groups and institutions in relation to the exhibition programme, the permanent collection and the outreach and education activities;
* observe and engage with other gallery-related events and activities. Twenty percent of the working week will be research focused and the student will be based at Limerick School of Art and Design for this work. This time may be blocked to allow for meetings with supervisor/s, research time/attendances at conferences, lectures and cultural visits, interviews with Professionals in the field etc. These research conferences etc. may be at home and/or abroad and will be accommodated by Gallery and School supervision. First year research will include theoretical Research on gallery management/Curatorial skills/museology.

Progress Reviews:
The student will be expected to present both written work and visual presentations of the research of gallery work. Experiences of cultural investigation at home and abroad and background learning, will be reported in journal /workbooks.

Year Two

Mid MA Review:

a) Elements of the gallery programme which the student has specifically engaged in.
Or
b) A specific project undertaken by the student such as an art event/exhibition outside the LCGA context.
Or
c) The curation of a student show

Final Submission:

* Initiate or co-curate an event / exhibition within the gallery context and work with a variety of factors necessary to bringing such a project to completion including the organisation and editing of printed material that provides an understanding of the chosen exhibition context.
* A supporting Journal / Dissertation will be a compulsory requirement of the final submission.

Requirements & Application:

Minimum Requirements:

1. Honours Primary Degree (minimum level: 2nd Class Honours or equivalent qualification ) in an Art or Design discipline or in a cognate area of study
2. Special interest in the field of Curatorial studies, historical and contemporary fine art and / or work experience in these or related areas.
3. Demonstrable IT and administrative skills

3. Project Management Skills
