Curator's talk: Mary Conlon at Faber Studios

Tuesday 24 August 2010, 6pm
Faber Studios, Catherine Street, Limerick

In the second talk from the Books V Cigarettes series, Mary Conlon discusses ideas and developments in her curatorial research project based on Italo Calvino's lectures Six Memos for the Next Millennium.

Mary Conlon is the third recipient of the Shinnors Scholarship – MA in Curatorial Studies and is at the developmental stage of her research project. Prompted by the imminent redevelopment of the historic Carnegie Building housing LCGA and its original function as the Carnegie Free Library and Museum, she is interested in the relationship between visual arts and literature.  As part of the LCGA off-site programme, she will organise a series of exhibitions and events under the name of Six Memos which refers to Italo Calvino’s lectures Six Memos for the Next Millennium.   The series will be divided into chapters, each with a distinct area of investigation.

The Shinnors Curatorial Scholarship provides the opportunity to investigate specific areas of interest through combined theoretical and empirical research and the initiation of an event or exhibition within the gallery context.   It allows the candidate to undertake a MA or PhD by Research at Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD), while based predominantly at Limerick City Gallery of Art (LCGA). The schema of the programme is to provide a unique learning opportunity for practice-based research.  The result is an immersion into the dynamic programme of a public gallery, with opportunities to meet and engage with artists, groups and institutions in relation to the gallery programmes. The funding for the project is provided by a scholarship donated for this purpose by Limerick City Gallery of Art and supported by John Shinnors.
