Limerick City Gallery of Art is delighted to present two major exhibitions to coincide with the launch of the newly extended Carnegie Building which will be officially opened by Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht, on Monday 16th January 2012 at 5pm. This celebration notably marks the 75th Anniversary of the inauguration of Limerick Municipal Art Gallery Committee in early 1937,  who planted the seed of the idea for a gallery in Limerick. What marvelous foresight this enlightened committee had.

This major extension and renovation, funded by the then Department of Arts Sports and Tourism through the Access II scheme, has reinstated Limerick City Gallery of Art in the Carnegie Building as an impressive contemporary art institution with state-of-the-art store facilities, purpose-built workshop spaces, a light filled café and a renewal of the 1948 West Gallery confirming Limerick’s position as a vibrant centre of excellence for visual arts.

The two exciting exhibitions A Vivid Imagination and Transitive Relationships that open in the renovated spaces, were devised to embrace the historic and the contemporary; celebrating the important Collection held by LCGA, and also the best of national and local contemporary art practice.

Commenting on this major capital development of €1.7 million for the City of Limerick, Minister Deenihan welcomed the re-launch of Limerick City Gallery of Art that will be open to the public seven days a week free of charge. Minister Deenihan said “This development will support the stimulation and development of the Visual Arts in Ireland, creating economic returns from tourism, supporting employment locally, and providing access to and participation in the arts by all sections of Irish society through the access and education programme of LCGA”.  The Minister commends Limerick for its foresight as far back as 1937 in the establishment of a gallery and now this Phase II redevelopment completes for Limerick an investment of national importance to showcase treasures from the past and potential artistic treasures of the future.

Limerick City Gallery of Art welcomes artists and audiences old and new to embrace this enhanced cultural institution in the heart of Limerick’s Georgian area, bounded by Limerick’s People’s Park, making it a jewel in the crown of Limerick’s cultural experience.
